OPERAS welcomes NISER
We are glad to welcome NISER as a new ordinary member of the OPERAS community in 2026.
The Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) is the foremost Socio-Economic Think Tank of the Nigerian Government. Established in 1950 as the West African Institute of Social and Economic Research (WAISER) and headquartered in Ibadan, it provided research and policy insights for the British West African colonies. Following Ghana’s independence in 1957, the Institute became affiliated with the University of Ibadan, and after Nigeria’s independence in 1960, it was renamed NISER. In 1977, it became an autonomous federal research institute.
Today, NISER is eminently positioned as a public policy think tank with capacity to deliver on Evidence for Learning and Policy Advisory. The Institute has an enviable mix of staff with multidisciplinary backgrounds and expertise. This blend of multidisciplinary expertise in one The Institute has 204 staff, comprising 121 non-research staff and 83 researchers. Researchers—including Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior, Intermediate, and Junior Fellows—are distributed across the Institute’s seven research departments:
- Agriculture & Food Policy,
- Economic & Business Policy,
- Environment & Physical Infrastructure Policy,
- Human Capital Policy,
- Innovation & Technology Policy,
- Political & Governance Policy,
- Social Policy.
The Research Management Department (RMD) and Knowledge Management Department (KMD) provide critical research support to the Institute’s seven research departments. In addition, the Library, Publishing, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Administration, Finance and Accounts, and other support units ensure the efficient operation of the Institute and facilitate the delivery of its research, policy, and knowledge management functions.
Given the context of NISER’s mandate, NISER is pleased to partner with OPERAS in developing and promoting socio-economic knowledge for the global community. NISER is pleased to be a part of the OPERAS community and looks forward to contributing its expertise in promoting Open Access to Social and Economic resources to the global community. As Nigeria’s foremost Socio-Economic Think Tank, NISER values the opportunity to collaborate with leading institutions committed to advancing open scholarly communication, innovation, and knowledge exchange in the social sciences and humanities. The Institute is confident that this partnership will foster meaningful collaboration, strengthen research visibility, and create new opportunities for shared learning and impact across regions.

OPERAS
OPERAS is the Research Infrastructure supporting open scholarly communication in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) in the European Research Area. Its mission is to coordinate and federate resources in Europe to efficiently address the scholarly communication needs of European researchers in the field of SSH. OPERAS’ aim is to make Open Science a reality for research in the SSH and achieve a scholarly communication system where knowledge produced in the SSH benefits researchers, academics, students and more generally the whole society across Europe and worldwide, without barriers.
