PRESS RELEASE: OPERAS leads session on Strengthening Trust at UN Science Summit for second consecutive year

Brussels, Belgium, 01.09.2025

OPERAS will once again host an online session at the Science Summit during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80), titled “Strengthening Trust through Transparency, Access and Quality: Emerging Strategies to Tackle Disinformation”. The session, taking place on 10 September 2025at 9 am (ET) / 3 pm (CEST) will highlight specific examples, such as the Information Quality Protocol of OPERAS, that address disinformation issues and build digital trust.

The session during the upcoming Science Summit UNGA80 addresses two pressing global challenges: (1) rebuilding trust among humans and societies and (2) combating the spread of disinformation. The objectives are rooted in the recognition that no trust in information is possible if mistrust is too high within societies. Secondly, it considers that fact-checking—though essential—arrives too late in the process to effectively tackle disinformation.

Two linked actions are essential to drastically reduce disinformation: 1. increasing the quality of content and 2. (re)building trust across those sharing and receiving content. The session will examine how these two areas—content quality and trust-building—are not only interrelated but work in tandem to significantly reduce the spread of disinformation. Efforts presented will illustrate how improving the integrity of information and establishing trust between institutions and the public is possible through actionable strategies that create a more informed, resilient, and cohesive society. The interconnections between trust markers and content quality disclosures will be presented in the context of existing efforts. Rooted in scientific frameworks that define criteria for creating trust and maintaining quality, the session closes with suggested actions for policymakers seeking to strengthen national data governance and stewardship.

OPERAS at the Science Summit — A continuous commitment

This marks the third consecutive year that OPERAS is participating in the Science Summit. In 2023, OPERAS contributed as a speaker in a session on “People-Centred Science and Digital Regulation leading to a People-Centred Future,” where Suzanne Dumouchel addressed Open Science, Diamond Open Access, and diversity in publishing. In 2024, OPERAS organised its own session, “Fostering Trust in the Digital Sphere: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach,” held on 11 September 2024, which built upon insights from its TrustOn 2024 workshop in Brussels.

Moreover, the TrustOn 2024 workshop and the 2024 Science Summit session resulted in both a comprehensive OPERAS report Fostering Trust in the Digital Age (January 2025), compiling over 27 papers on combating disinformation and strengthening trust in science and digital ecosystems, and the March 2025 policy brief Addressing Disinformation Challenges: a critical effort to support freedom, democracies and trust, promoting open access to high-quality SSH research and initiatives like the Information Quality Protocol (IQP) to tackle disinformation at its roots.
