OPERAS welcomes KU Leuven Libraries

We are glad to welcome KU Leuven Libraries as a new ordinary member of the OPERAS community in 2025.
Founded in 1425, KU Leuven celebrates its 600th anniversary in 2025, making it one of Europe’s oldest universities. KU Leuven’s main campus is situated in Leuven, at about 30 kilometers from Brussels, the capital of Belgium and Europe. Furthermore, the University has campuses in nine other Flemish cities, including Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. Today, it accommodates almost 65,000 students and employs more than 20,000 people.
For research, KU Leuven ranks among the world’s finest. In collaboration with other partners, KU Leuven Libraries supports these research endeavours by providing guidance and help throughout the entire research process from the conception of a research idea, over the creation of data, up to the publication of research results and beyond.
KU Leuven embraces Open Science as the new normal and is committed to play a pioneering role in the international academic Open Science community. KU Leuven implements Open Science in a non-dogmatic way that supports critical thinking and respects disciplinary differences. This also includes KU Leuven Libraries’ support for open infrastructure and community-led, non-profit initiatives. This commitment is realized through the KU Leuven Fund for Fair Open Access and by reallocating part of the collection budget of KU Leuven Libraries. This support extends to Diamond Open Access journals and book series, Open Access publishing initiatives, as well as community-driven tools and infrastructures.
“Becoming a member of OPERAS is a logical step in our long-standing commitment to advance openness in research and teaching within the social sciences and humanities. We look forward to working with others and strengthening our contribution to the collective realisation of this goal.”, Demmy Verbeke, Head Ku Leuven Libraries Artes and Associate Professor of Open Research, Faculty of Arts.
KU Leuven Libraries will contribute to the Open Access Business Models Special Interest Group.
We are looking forward to further collaborations.
